I had no idea what tunnel traffic was (or could be) until we hit the Mount Blanc Tunnel. It was the first Saturday after Christmas and it seemed everyone wanted to go to Chamonix!
ATMB.com is a pretty handy site, but they don’t seem to actually predict when there is bad traffic, only report it when it happens, with about a 45 minute delay. We arrived at 4pm – and thought we had a 30+ minute wait. They were right, it was 30 minutes plus another 150 minutes… Yes – 3 hours in back to back traffic. We missed our check in, our ski delivery, our supper…
When the traffic is this bad, they close the highway and divert all traffic to one road. They do this to avoid the cheaters who try to game the system. So, don’t listen to Google maps, just sit in line, maybe put on an audiobook -or a movie, but I think it’s illegal, but seriously, you are barely moving…
